Placement in Leicester January 2011January 31, 2011
After Christmas I spent a week in Leicester with Sonya Brown, an ex student, who is a curate at St Philip’s Church in Leicester. The vicar of St Philip’s, Canon Dr Alan Race, works at the St Philip’s Centre. The centre offers training and education for churches and for Christians to live confidently in a multi faith society. This is important as Leicester is the most multi faith city outside London. I spent time in the parish and at the centre joining in with inter faith youth group, inter faith salsa aerobics and going for a meal out with the Christian-Moslem Women’s dialogue group.
While I was in Leicester I visited the Mosque across the road from the church, a Sikh Gudwara, a Hindu Temple and a Jain Temple. We were made very welcome in all these places of worship, and it was fascinating to experience the different ways in which people experience God. Meeting Alan and the director of the centre, Canon Dr John Hall gave me an insight into the ways in which the Christian Church can engage with the other faith communities that live in our parishes.
