All Things Considered (BBC Radio Wales)May 2, 2010

The launch of the new vocations strategy by the Church in Wales, has caused something of a ‘media frenzy’ in and around Llandaff. As an ordinand of somewhat atypical circumstances, I was asked by BBC Radio Wales to take part in a discussion on their Sunday morning programme, All Things Considered.

In a state of nervous anticipation, I duly headed for the studios, where I met Roy Jenkins, the programme’s host, and Jonathan Stephens, Principal of the Wales College of Evangelical Theology. We were then joined on air by Bishop Gregory Cameron (leader of the vocations strategy), and Sister Gemma Simmonds (from Heythrop College in London). We are all from diverse backgrounds and different points of view on many matters, so the debate was lively, but also friendly and upbeat.

It was very good to be able to share my experience of being called to ordained ministry, and to hear the stories of the others there. Each denomination seems to face different challenges, and for the Church in Wales the challenge has several aspects: firstly, encouraging vocations in people from a range of age-groups, circumstances and backgrounds; secondly, in training them in a way that is suitable for their circumstances; and then sending them out well-prepared for a world that clearly needs a different model of both church and ministry.

‘Appearing’ on the radio was just one of many new experiences I have had since my training at St Michael’s began. This year has been a hectic, action-packed adventure for me, and taking part in this was one of very many high points!
